Clinical Labs at Methodist Hospital Accredited for Excellence

The clinical laboratories at Methodist Hospital have been awarded two accreditations recently by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). These labs handle all patient testing and the preparation of blood products for transfusion in the South Philadelphia hospital. “This accreditation is a result of a team effort,” said Dr. Harvey J. Bellin, chief of Clinical Laboratories at Methodist Hospital Division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. "Our entire staff is to be commended."

CAP’s inspectors examine the records and quality control of the laboratory, as well as the education and qualifications of the total staff. They also examine the facilities, equipment, laboratory safety and laboratory management to determine how well the laboratory is serving the patient.

The AABB determines whether the hospital and transfusion service meet established requirements for methods, procedures, personnel knowledge, equipment and facilities. The accreditation program promotes the highest standard of care for patients, all aspects of blood banking and transfusion medicine.

Methodist Hospital, a division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, has been providing state-of-the-art, community-based health-care services to residents of South Philadelphia since 1892. Staffed with board-certified physicians in every specialty, Methodist Hospital is dedicated to superior quality health care, and offers a wide range of community outreach services.

The College of American Pathologists is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. It is an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective medical care.

The American Association of Blood Banks sets standards, assesses and accredits blood collection and transfusion facilities, and provides continuing education and information. These standards not only reflect the level of professional proficiency for blood banks and transfusion services in the United States, but also provide the basis for practice in similar facilities around the world.
