Jefferson College of Health Professions
and Methodist Hospital Announce Associate of Science in Nursing
Degree Program
Thomas Jefferson Universitys Jefferson College of Health
Professions (JCHP) and Methodist Hospital Division of Thomas
Jefferson University have teamed up to offer a new opportunity
to enter the lucrative job market of nursing: an Associate
of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree.
This degree offers the fastest way to become a bedside RN,
and Jefferson is the only academic health sciences center
in the region to offer the two-year associate degree program.
Jeffersons long history of nursing education expertise
and top quality clinical experience, combined with Methodists
strong reputation in South Philadelphia, make this program
an attractive way to decrease the national and local shortage
of nurses.
There are more vacant nursing positions than there are registered
nurses in both urban Philadelphia and rural Pennsylvania,
according to employment data. This workforce shortage is predicted
to continue and to intensify. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics
predicts a 21 percent increase in the need for nurses nationwide
before 2008 compared to a 14 percent increase in all other
occupations.
The ASN programs strong emphasis on clinical experience
will prepare students to work as a registered nurse in todays
complex health care environment. JCHPs highly credentialed
faculty is active in practice, so students learn from nursing
professionals. After two years of education, graduates will
be eligible to take the Registered Nurse licensure exam.
Jefferson graduates have a strong reputation, and employers
throughout the region seek JCHP nurses. Jefferson students
regularly earn high pass rates on the RN licensure exam, and
graduates of the ASN program are expected to experience similar
success. The November 2003 PA Board of Nursing results showed
that JCHP nursing students had the highest pass rate, 96.67
percent, among all 21 nursing programs in the Philadelphia
region.
The ASN program will start in the fall. In addition to Methodist
Hospital, the program is offered in central Pennsylvania,
at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Jeffersons
Department of Nursing offers a spectrum of programs in addition
to the ASN program, including the traditional BSN, BSN for
second degree students, BSN for RNs, and masters level
programs.
