Interventional radiology is a sub-specialty of radiology in which minimally invasive procedures are performed using real-time imaging guidance, such as fluoroscopy or ultrasound.
Some of these procedures are done for purely diagnostic reasons, while others are performed for treatment purposes. Using the images as roadmaps, the interventional radiologist carries out each procedure with guide wires and catheters (tiny tubes) in order to guide small instruments through the body to the areas of interest.
Methodist’s interventional radiology team routinely performs these vascular and non-vascular procedures:
- Angiography
- Angioplasty
- Biliary and urologic procedures
- Biopsy and drainage procedures
- Dialysis procedures
- IVC filter placement
- Arterial and venous stent placements
- Insertion of subcutaneous chest ports for chemotherapy
- Transjugular Intraportal Systemic Shunts (TIPSS)
- Uterine embolization
- Vertebroplasty
Emergency procedures are available 24 hours a day.
