How Jefferson Gives Back
Meeting the needs of our communities is at the core of what Jefferson is as an organization and has been for 185 years. And serving our neighborhoods is becoming increasingly important as more is being expected of us from the federal government as a nonprofit healthcare provider.
In FY 2010, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals provided almost $100 million of services to almost 90,000 individuals in our community seeking care or information from Jefferson. This community benefit is delivered in three distinct ways:
- Dollar support for individuals and families who can't afford the cost of Hospital services, including those who seek care from our Emergency Medicine Department
- The Hospital's contribution towards the education of doctors, nurses and other health professionals
- A variety of programs and services offered to the community including support groups, health screenings and wellness education
Additionally, many Jeffersonians volunteer personal time, offering their expertise and passion, to improve the well-being of the community. Participating on a departmental team that raises money for a cause; organizing a collection to benefit the needy; volunteering with a faith-based or community group; serving on not-for-profit boards; mentoring and coaching at-risk children; counseling the unemployed; and traveling to domestic and international destinations to deliver free healthcare are all examples of the generosity of Jefferson staff.
