Acoustic Neuroma Treatment at Jefferson
At Jefferson, acoustic neuromas are treated by a team of physicians including neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists and otolaryngologists. Physicians who treat our patients with acoustic neuromas have been recognized as Top Doctors by Philadelphia magazine, one of whom also currently serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the Acoustic Neuroma Association (ANA). The ANA recognizes Jefferson as a Center of Excellence for treatment of patients with acoustic neuromas.
Our physicians serve a large and varied patient community, including children and patients with NF-2. Treatments utilize the most leading-edge diagnostic procedures such as computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to accurately diagnose your condition and get you on the path to recovery.
If surgery is required, our surgeons are experts at all microsurgical approaches to acoustic neuromas. A nonsurgical treatment option is radiosurgery, often called Gamma Knife™, using carefully focused radiation to reduce the size or limit the growth of the tumor. The Jefferson team has been providing radiosurgery treatments for 15 years and delivered the first radiosurgery treatments in the Delaware Valley in 1991. We have pioneered a technique called fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSR), which has shown great promise for hearing preservation in patients with acoustic neuromas.
If surgery or conventional radiation is not an option to treat acoustic neuroma, our radiation oncologists offer CyberKnife, the first frameless robotic radiosurgery system that can destroy tumors or other lesions without the need for open surgery. Like many robotic procedures, CyberKnife offers physicians a much greater range of reaching tumor sites that were previously considered to be untreatable using other stereotactic radiosurgery methods.
