Jefferson Kimmel Cancer Center Network Appoints New Clinical Director
The
Jefferson Kimmel Cancer Center Network has appointed Leonard Gomella,
M.D., F.A.C.S., clinical director of the network after serving as
interim clinical director for nine months. Three other physicians also
took on new leadership roles as associate clinical directors: Scot
Fisher, D.O.; Ernest “Gary” Rosato, M.D., F.A.C.S.; and William Tester,
M.D., F.A.C.P.
“Serving
as clinical director gives me the opportunity work to strengthen the
relationship among the members of the network with the resources
available through the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson,” Dr. Gomella
said. “This relationship is critical as we strive to meet our most
important goal of providing our patients with the highest standards of
cancer care. With the appointment of the associate clinical directors,
we now have a strong multidisciplinary core leadership team to oversee
the network’s strategic planning process with our affiliates and to
enhance the network’s success.”
Dr.
Gomella is the Bernard W. Godwin Professor of Prostate Cancer and chair
of the Department of Urology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas
Jefferson University and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. A
well-respected expert in urologic oncology and clinical trial
development, Dr. Gomella also serves as associate director for the
Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson.
Dr.
Fisher is a clinical associate professor and director of Satellite
Facilities in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Jefferson Medical
College. He is also director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at
Frankford Hospitals.
Dr. Rosato is an associate professor at Jefferson Medical College, where he is also the Francis E. Rosato Endowed Chair in
Surgery, and the director of the Division of General Surgery.
Dr.
Tester is an associate professor of medicine at Jefferson Medical
College. He is the chairman of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and
the director of the Cancer Center at Albert Einstein Medical Center. He
is also the Principal Investigator for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology
Group Affiliate Network.
The
Jefferson Kimmel Cancer Center Network is a consortium of institutions
dedicated to improving cancer care and increasing clinical research. It
supports the cancer programs of its members through education,
information, research and cancer program development. Kimmel Cancer
Center is an NCI-designated clinical cancer center and was ranked 28th in the 2008 U.S. News and World Report
ranking of top cancer hospitals in the United States. The Kimmel Cancer
Center is the cornerstone of the network, which operates the Jefferson
Oncology Group (JOG). JOG is a cooperative program to enhance clinical
and translational cancer research, including clinical trial
development. The chair of JOG is Rita Axelrod, M.D., associate
professor of Medical Oncology at Jefferson Medical College and the
Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson.
The
Kimmel Cancer Center is a member of several national research groups,
including the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), the Eastern
Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG)
and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP).
