David S. Tichansky, M.D., Joins the Department of Surgery at Jefferson
David
S. Tichansky, M.D., F.A.C.S., recently joined the Department of Surgery
at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH), and will serve as the
director of the Bariatric Surgical Program. He has also been named an
associate professor of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas
Jefferson University. Dr. Tichansky has performed extensive research
in the fields of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery to improve
patient safety and care.
Dr.
Tichansky received his medical degree from the New Jersey Medical
School at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey
(UMDNJ) in Newark, New Jersey in 1996. He earned a bachelor of science
degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lafayette College in Easton,
Pennsylvania in 1989. He went on to complete a Post-Baccalaureate
Pre-Med Program at Towson State University in Towson, Maryland in
1991. Dr. Tichansky’s postgraduate training began as an intern in the
Department of Surgery at TJUH from 1996-1997. He also completed a
residency in surgery here from 1997-2002.
Dr.
Tichansky has held several fellowship appointments including a research
fellowship in Surgical Oncology at TJUH and The Wistar Institute at the
University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia between 1999 and 2000. In
addition, he also completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and
Bariatric Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia
Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia in June 2003. Prior to
joining Jefferson, Dr. Tichansky served as an associate professor in
the Department of Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science
Center (UTHSC) in Memphis, Tennessee.
While
there, he also served as chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery,
co-director of the Weight Management Center at Methodist University
Hospital, director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at
UTHSC, and also as a member of the Board of Directors for UT Medical
Group.
Dr.
Tichansky is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery, as well
as a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. He is co-chair of the
Membership Committee of the American Society for Metabolic and
Bariatric Surgery and serves on the National Curriculum and Education
Committee of the Fellowship Council (of Minimally Invasive, Bariatric,
Hepatobiliary, and advanced GI fellowships). Dr. Tichansky is also a
member of the Association of Academic Surgeons.
Dr.
Tichansky is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society at
the New Jersey Medical School at the University of Medicine &
Dentistry of New Jersey. He has an extensive list of editorial
appointments including peer reviewer for several journals including Surgical Endoscopy, Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases and Obesity Surgery.
Dr. Tichansky has been invited to give more than a dozen lectures, has
authored, or co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed articles, five book
chapters and more than 100 scientific presentations, and published
numerous studies in national and international journals.
