Niels D. Martin, M.D., Joins the Department of Surgery at Jefferson
Niels
Douglas Martin, M.D., recently joined the Department of Surgery at
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and was also named an assistant
professor in Surgery at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson
University. He specializes in Acute Care Surgery, which encompasses
Trauma Surgery, General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.
Dr.
Martin received his medical degree in May 2000 from the University of
Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – Robert Wood Johnson Medical
School in Piscataway, New Jersey. He received a Bachelor of Arts in
biological sciences in 1997 from Rutgers University. A large part of
Dr. Martin’s post-graduate education has been completed at Jefferson.
At Jefferson, he completed a General Surgery Internship in 2001 and his
General Surgery Residency in 2006. During that time, he also completed
a one-year Vascular Tissue Engineering Research Fellowship.
Dr.
Martin most recently completed a two-year fellowship at the Hospital of
the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) in Traumatology and Surgical
Critical Care. While at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Martin was
appointed as an instructor in Surgery, and joined the medical staff not
only at HUP, but also at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, St.
Luke’s Hospital, and The Reading Hospital Center. He served as the
Senior Administrative Fellow within the Division of Traumatology at
HUP.
Dr.
Martin has been Board Certified in Surgery by the American Board of
Surgery since 2007. He is also Board Eligible in Surgical Critical
Care, also granted by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Martin is an
instructor of Advanced Trauma Life Support, a course organized by the
American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.
Dr.
Martin’s clinical interests involve all aspects of Acute Care Surgery
including care of the critically injured, emergency and elective
general surgery, and critical care management of the intensive care
patient. Academically, Dr. Martin pursues outcomes research, clinical
trials, and surgical education-based research. He has presented to
numerous national organizations and is published in a variety of
prominent journals including the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the Journal of Surgical Research, among others.
Dr.
Martin has an established interest in surgical education. He has
received many honors and awards in education including the Arnold P.
Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching award. He has been
named the Associate Program Director of Graduate Education within the
Department of Surgery at Jefferson.
Dr. Martin currently resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
