Denise C. Fitzgerald, Ph.D., Joins the Department of Neurology at Jefferson
Denise C. Fitzgerald, Ph.D., recently joined the Department of Neurology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson
University as an instructor. She specializes in neuroimmunology.
Dr.
Fitzgerald received her Ph.D. in 2004, as well as her B.Sc. degree in
Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology in 2000 from University College
Dublin in Ireland. Her postdoctoral training began at Jefferson as a
postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neurology in 2004 until her
recent appointment here.
Dr.
Fitzgerald has been a member of the National Postdoctoral Association
since 2006. She has also been a member of the American Association for
the Advancement of Science since 2005. Dr. Fitzgerald has held
prominent positions on several academic committees at Thomas Jefferson
University. She was Treasurer of the Jefferson Postdoctoral Association
(JPA) (2004-2005) before becoming Vice President of Social Affairs
(2005-2006), and ultimately becoming President of the JPA (2006-2007).
From 2005-2006, Dr. Fitzgerald served as the Co-Chair of the first
Jefferson Postdoctoral Research Symposium. She also served as the
Chair of the JPA/OPA Distinguished Mentor Award from 2007-2008.
Dr.
Fitzgerald has won numerous awards including a postdoctoral fellowship
(2005-2008) from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and travel
awards from the International Society for Neuroimmunology, the National
Multiple Sclerosis Society, the European Commission for Treatment and
Research in MS and the National Postdoctoral Association. Dr.
Fitzgerald has co-authored more that ten peer-reviewed research
articles, review articles and numerous book chapters primarily
associated with Multiple Sclerosis. Her major teaching and research
responsibilities at TJU include mentoring medical students in their
summer research internship and mentoring college and high school
students in research placements.
