Monisha Kumar, M.D., Joins the Department of Neurology at Jefferson
Monisha Kumar, M.D., recently joined the Department of Neurology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University
as an assistant professor. She specializes in Neurocritical Care.
Dr.
Kumar received her medical degree from the Hahnemann School of Medicine
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2000. She earned a bachelor of arts
degree with honors in Women’s Health and Women’s Studies from the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1996. She also
completed an intensive summer program in clinical effectiveness at the
Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts in 2006.
Dr.
Kumar’s postgraduate training began at Hahnemann Hospital as an intern
of Medicine (2000-2001) before becoming a resident in Neurology
(2001-2004), and ultimately serving as chief resident (2003-2004). She
served as a fellow of Vascular Neurology (2004-2005) and then as a
fellow of Neurosciences (2005-2006) at Massachusetts General Hospital
in Boston, Massachusetts.
Prior
to joining Jefferson, Dr. Kumar was an assistant professor of Neurology
and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo
Alto, California from 2006-2007. While in California, she performed
several duties at Stanford University Medical Center including the
development of a neurotrauma program, creation of a shiver protocol for
hypothermia/induced normothermia, the establishment of an electronic
medical record, and expansion of the Critical Care Nurse Education and
Resident Education curricula.
Dr.
Kumar is a certified member of the American Board of Psychiatry and
Neurology and the United Council of Neurological Subspecialties. Her
specific research interests lie in the hematological aspects of
Neurocritical care. She has begun to collaborate with the department
of Hematology/Oncology, with projects ranging from novel uses of iron
chelators to the validation of new platelet function assays.
Dr.
Kumar is a member of numerous professional societies including the
American Medical Association, the American Academy of Neurology, the
American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association, the
Neurocritical Care Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
She has also been an Ad Hoc reviewer for several leading journals
including Stroke, Journal Watch Neurology and Neurosurgery.
