Kimmel Cancer Center Director Awarded R. Douglas Wright Medallion at the University of Melbourne, Australia
Richard G. Pestell, M.D., Ph.D., FACP, FRACP, Director of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, was honored with the R. Douglas Wright Medallion and delivered the R. Douglas Wright Lecture at the University of Melbourne in Australia. The award is given in the areas of science, literature, economics and politics. Prior recipients include Sir James Tait, co-discoverer of aldosterone.
Dr. Pestell is an internationally renowned expert in oncology and endocrinology. He serves as Chairman of the Department of Cancer Biology and Associate Dean of Cancer Programs at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University; Vice President of Oncology Services at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals; and Director of the Delaware Valley Institute for Clinical and Translational Science.
In his talk, Dr. Pestell outlined the history and development of the understanding of cancer. He reviewed the two decades of work from his laboratory that identified new gene targets as predictors of therapy response and new gene targets for cancer therapies, including targeting cancer stem cells, and new technologies for targeting human cancer treatment.
The R. Douglas Wright Lecture is hosted by the friends and colleagues of Professor Sir Douglas Wright, Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. The R. Douglas Wright lecture is a series of occasional lectures. The topics are chosen to reflect Professor Wright’s contribution to the University.
