Dr. Taras Talks About His Device for Reducing Wrist Injury Recovery Time on 6 ABC
Margo Kinard broke a bone in her wrist while riding her bicycle on her way to meet friends. After getting a cast on her wrist, she was referred to Jefferson's John S. Taras, MD, a hand surgeon at The Philadelphia Hand Center, P.C.
Dr. Taras evaluated Ms. Kinard and decided that the best option for her recovery was utilizing a device that he himself had invented, which consists of special pins. Using small incisions, he inserts the pins and surgically drives them through the bone fragments. The procedure takes half the usual time in the operating room and only requires light anesthesia.
Recovery time is 4 to 6 weeks faster than with casts or screws, a big plus for people who need to return to work quickly.
