Medicine on the Move: Jefferson Launches Mobile Website for Smartphones
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is one of the first hospitals, both locally and nationally, to launch a content-rich mobile website for use on smartphones. This new website provides easy, instant-access to information about emergency services, doctors and their office locations, convenient parking and walking or driving directions. With the new mobile version, Jefferson hopes to improve the experience for website visitors such as patients, family, friends and care-givers.
Visitors who access the mobile website from their smartphones at m.jeffersonhospital.org can:
- Find the address and directions to Jefferson’s three Emergency Department locations
- Choose a doctor that’s right for them by using the easy to navigate “Find a Doctor” function
- Make an appointment by connecting to 1-800-JEFF-NOW with one-touch
- View a map that provides walking and driving directions to all campus locations
- Get information on Jefferson departments, services and programs
- See Hospital visiting hours
- Locate nearby restaurants, hotels, shops and attractions
“Our patients are on the go and are using their smartphones to find the information they need quickly and easily,” said Monica Doyle, senior director of Strategy, Internet and Marketing Research. “We know how important it is for that information to be available to them wherever they are and whenever they need it. That’s why we wanted to create a special and unique experience for them when they visit our website from a mobile device.”
The development of the website included input from a variety of sources including patients, visitors and family. Doctors, nurses, telephone operators and emergency room staff were also consulted.
“We wanted to know what kind of questions people call to ask so we knew what information would be important for them to have on their smartphone,” said Doyle. “A lot of the responses focused on parking, directions and visiting hours but patients also told us they needed to call their doctor’s office when they were running late to an appointment. They also told us navigating Jefferson’s campus can be challenging so we included pictures of entrances to our buildings and made it easy for them to get both walking and driving directions to campus or from one building to another. We even included a section for families and visitors on “things to do” while their loved one is being treated at Jefferson.”
