Dr. Armenti Interviewed by Cleveland Plain-Dealer About Pregnancy After Kidney Transplant
For women with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure who receive a kidney transplant, fertility can be restored within a few months and pregnancy following a transplant is usually safe.
However, there are a number of risks and pregnancy complications including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and preterm delivery. Researchers have reviewed previous studies published from 2000 to 2010 and found high rates of complications.
Dr. Vincent Armenti, transplant surgeon and principal investigator of the National Transplantation Pregnancy Registry at Jefferson, says in an interview with the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, "Even with proof of successful pregnancies over the past decades, transplant recipients and their families still need information to help them assess the risks, and counseling if they choose to proceed."
