Dr. Newberg Featured in O, The Oprah Magazine, About Spiritual Experiences
About half of all Americans say that they've had a spiritual experience, ranging from a sense of well-being while watching a sunset to a near-death journey. These occurrences are usually very personal and difficult to articulate.
Dr. Andrew Newberg, director of research at the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine, is a "neurotheologian" researching the theories and neuroscience behind spiritual experiences.
In an interview with O, The Oprah Magazine, Dr. Newberg explains the common elements he has discovered among his patients' experiences. These include a strong sense of realness, a feeling of connectedness and occurrence during times of strong emotions.
