Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson Genetic Counselor Featured in Cancer Today Magazine
Sarah Charles, genetic counselor at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, is featured in the "Sound Advice" section of Cancer Today magazine. The question is: "I am caring for a family member with cancer. I'm worried that I, or my children, will get this disease. Do you recommend genetic testing?"
Sarah explains, "Most cancer is not hereditary. However, in some families a susceptibility to certain types of cancer is inherited, or passed from parent to child due to a specific genetic condition."
She adds that the timing for genetic testing has to be right. Further, genetic testing is most likely to be informative if doctors can first test the family member who has already been diagnosed with the cancer.
