Dr. Niels Martin and Jefferson Patient Rebecca Levenberg Featured on 6 ABC
On November 9, 2010, Rebecca Levenberg was biking to work from her home in South Philadelphia when she was struck by a garbage truck. She was rushed to the trauma center at Jefferson and underwent an above-the-knee amputation and more than a dozen surgeries over the next eight months.
While in the hospital, Rebecca received a necklace inscribed with the Chinese proverb, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." This quote inspired Rebecca to walk a 1,000 miles on her prosthetic leg. Exactly a year after her accident, Rebecca walked her 160th mile at Jefferson with some of her former doctors, nurses and physical therapists.
In a 6 ABC interview, Rebecca's trauma surgeon Niels Martin, MD, said, "This unfortunate incident could not have happened to a better person, she's really embraced this. Her enthusiasm, I'm sure, is helping many others like her."
