Drs. Gomella and Lisanti Featured in Jewish Exponent Special Cancer Section
The Jewish Exponent's special cancer section, "Fighting Cancer: A Special Section for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month," included a report on new cancer research, technologies and treatments taking place at institutions in the Philadelphia region.
Jefferson urologist Dr. Leonard Gomella is featured in the article, "New Method for Detecting Bladder Cancer." The Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson is the only hospital in the Mid-Atlantic region authorized to use Cysview.
Dr. Gomella explains, "The way we find bladder tumors is by doing a cystoscopy under sedation in the operating room, where we insert a fiber-optic telescope into the bladder. Cysview is injected into the bladder. The abnormal cells absorb it; the normal cells don’t. Cysview increases our yield by 15 to 30 percent, which is very significant."
In another article, "Metabolo-Genomics," Dr. Michael Lisanti's new research on breast cancer treatment is highlighted. Traditionally, treatments focused on discovering what genes are involved in the creation of the cancer and fighting those genes. Now, Dr. Lisanti and other researchers at the Kimmel Cancer Center are looking at what the cancer cells are using as fuel to procreate and then cutting off the food source.
