Drs. Diecidue and Taub Interviewed by Philadelphia Magazine About 3-D Technology in Oral Surgery
In the past, oral surgeons used plaster to make models of their patients' teeth. However, the plaster molds often crumbled and left patients with a bad taste in their mouths.
Now, oral surgeons of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Jefferson, including Dr. Robert Diecidue and Dr. Daniel Taub, are using cone-beam CAT scans to make 3-D models.
Unlike the old plaster models, these scans let physicians view the bone structure under the gums, so that they can better map out surgical procedures in advance. In a Philadelphia magazine interview, Dr. Taub says, "Previously, you might open up the area and realize you have to do something else, like bone grafting. These scans decrease the need for multiple surgeries."
