Dr. Berghella Comments on ABCNews.com Story About Planned Cesarean Sections
According to the CDC, one in every three babies in the U.S. is born by Cesarean section. This rate rose by 53 percent between 1996 and 2007 alone.
According to Dr. Vincenzo Berghella, director of Jefferson's Maternal Fetal Medicine Division, the medical term for this is "delivery on maternal request."
In an interview with ABCNews.com about Beyonce's recent birth, Dr. Berghella says, "It's not a new phenomenon - it's been going on for years." He adds, "Women don't want to mess their bodies up."
