Jefferson Medical Oncologist Comments on Small-Cell Lung Cancer in the Inquirer
Although a nonsmoker, Penn State football coach Joe Paterno died recently from metastatic small-cell carcinoma of the lung.
In an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer, medical oncologist Dr. Barbara Campling of the Jefferson Kimmel Cancer Center explains, "Small-cell lung cancer accounts for 13 percent of all lung cancers, but usually occurs in smokers or former heavy smokers. It's extremely rare to have small-cell cancer in a nonsmoker."
