Dr. Elena Gitelson Quoted In E! Online News About Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma

In an E! Online News story about the recent death of 39-year-old actor Andy Whitfield who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, many of his fans believed he was cancer free after receiving treatment.

But Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a particular type of cancer that is known for seemingly disappearing, only to return with even more strength and virulence, according to the article.

Dr. Elena Gitelson, medical oncologist with the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, explains, "The cells that do remain under the radar are often very resistant to treatment. About 99.9 percent of the cancer could be dead, but the rest is dormant. Those remaining cells will have acquired new genetic abnormalities and become  more aggressive, and grow even faster."
