Jefferson Pediatrician Gives Advice to Student Athletes in USA Today
According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, more than 3.5 million kids 14 and under are treated for sports injuries each year.
In a USA Today interview, Gary Emmett, MD, director of inpatient pediatrics at Jefferson, advises kids and parents, "A good day is a day when you read for an hour and run for an hour. But running doesn't mean hitting the sports fields with the gusto of an NFL running back."
To help prevent sports injuries among student athletes, Dr. Emmett recommends a daily multivitamin and believes that for a healthy body and mind, free play is as important as competitive sports.
