Dr. Marja Nevalainen and Jefferson's Kimmel Cancer Center Featured in Philadelphia Business Journal
Over the past decade, pharmaceutical companies have cut sales, research staff and have undergone major mergers. As a result, many academic medical centers and medical schools are partnering with drug companies that are looking for help with drug discovery and drug development.
In a Philadelphia Business Journal article, Dr. Marja T. Nevalainen of the Kimmel Cancer Center explains, "There is a consensus that pharma is working more closely with academia right now. Such collaborations benefit both parties as well as patients."
After publishing research about a signaling pathway linked to prostate cancer, known as Jak/Stat5, Dr. Nevalainen was contacted by many pharmaceutical companies that were interested in working with her and other researchers at the Kimmel Cancer Center to investigate potential new drugs for cancer.
