Dr. Viscusi Talks to ABC News About Intraoperative Awareness

Unintended intraoperative awareness, or being awake during surgery, is rare but concerns many patients. An innovative monitoring system, however, measures electrical brain activity and attempts to detect awareness in patients.

In an ABC News article, Dr. Eugene Viscusi says, "The real take-away for both patients and the medical community is that the bispectral index monitor is useful but not the last word." He also tells the media outlet that it's the anesthesiologist's management of the patient's care that makes the difference.
