Drs. Baxter and Berghella Quoted in Philadelphia Inquirer Story About Relationship Between Cervical Length and Preterm Birth
Premature birth is the top cause of infant death and disability in the United States and other developed countries. In the past, doctors have not had the ability to predict preterm births nor prevent them from occurring.
According to a Philadelphia Inquirer story, new research by Jefferson obstetricians Drs. Jason Baxter and Vincenzo Berghella shows that a shortened cervix can be a risk factor for preterm births and recommends progesterone gel as a treatment for women with this condition. Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Jefferson, Dr. Berghella has drafted guidelines that would make cervical-length screening and vaginal progesterone therapy a standard part of obstetric care, writes the author.
