Jefferson Interventional Radiologists Inducted as Fellows into Society of Interventional Radiology

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital interventional radiologists Daniel B. Brown, M.D., FSIR, and Carin Gonsalves, M.D., FSIR, were recently inducted as fellows into the Society of Interventional Radiology. The Jefferson interventional radiologists were two of 26 fellows inducted nationwide during 36th Annual Scientific Meeting held in Chicago earlier this year.

Being named a Society of Interventional Radiology Fellow recognizes sustained outstanding performance. According to the Society of Interventional Radiology, an SIR fellow (or FSIR) is an interventional radiologist who has been an active or corresponding SIR member for at least five years, has distinguished himself or herself individually and has been recognized by the society as a leading contributor in educational, investigational, organizational or professional aspects of interventional radiology. Fewer than 10 percent of SIR’s 4,700 members have achieved this honor.

“We commend Dr. Brown and Dr. Gonsalves for having achieved this honor, which demonstrates their commitment to the profession of interventional radiology and the patients they serve,” says Vijay M. Rao, M.D., F.A.C.R., professor and chair of the department of Radiology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. “Drs. Brown and Gonsalves have distinguished themselves among the best clinicians in our field, and have underscored Jefferson’s commitment to outstanding patient care.

Dr. Brown specializes in cardiovascular and interventional radiology, with a focus on liver and kidney cancer. He earned his medical degree from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in 1993, completed his residency at Bryn Mawr Hospital and a fellowship at Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Brown has been named to Philadelphia magazine’s 2009, 2010 and 2011 “Top Docs” list and “Best Doctors in America/St. Louis” from 2004 to 2008. He came to Jefferson from the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University, where he served as a faculty member for eight years.

Dr. Gonsalves specializes in cardiovascular and interventional radiology, particularly metastatic uveal melanoma. She earned her medical degree from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in 1993, performed an internship at Crozer Chester Medical Center, and her residency and a fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Gonsalves has served as the Interventional Radiology Fellowship Program Director at Jefferson since 2006. She recently received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Education at Jefferson Medical College, as well as the Jefferson Medical College Outstanding Clinician Award.

The Society of Interventional Radiology is a national organization of physicians, scientists and allied health professionals dedicated to improving public health through disease management and minimally invasive, image-guided therapeutic interventions.
