Jefferson Medical Physicist Working with OSU Astronomers to Better Target Radiation Therapy
Perhaps the stars are the key to better targeting malignant cells?
According to a Columbus Dispatch article, Ohio State University (OSU) astronomers are working with experts like Jefferson medical physicist Yan Yu to better target radiation treatment that won't damage the rest of the body. They are studying how different elements absorb and emit radiation in stars and around black holes.
"It's something like this - you plant a smart device (into the tumor) that you can later activate or stimulate by using highly-tuned X-rays," Yu tells the Columbus Dispatch. "The device will begin to expel electrons to the tumor and you can stop it when there is sufficient damage or you can continue it if the tumor is still active."
