Dr. Greenspon's Research on Infection Increase in Patients with Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators Highlighted in HealthDay News

The risk of infection for patients with heart pacemakers and defibrillators has more than doubled since the early 1990s. New research conducted by the Jefferson Heart Institute found that a spike in infections after 2004 correlated with a rise in the number of cardiac electrophysiological device (CIED) patients with four other major problems: kidney failure, heart failure, diabetes and respiratory failure.

In a HealthDay News article, study author and director of Cardiac Electrophysiology at Jefferson, explains "We believe the growing number of clinical comorbidities in this patient population plays a large role in the increase in infections associated with CIEDs."
