Arthroscopy of the Temporomandibular Joint at Jefferson
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment procedure used for injuries to a joint like the knee. Arthroscopy of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), however, is surgery to treat problems associated with your jaw. You may need a TMJ arthroscopy if you experience jaw pain and find that your jaw is not moving like it should. During your surgery, an arthroscope (a small bendable camera) is used to see your TMJ and take pictures so that our oral surgeons can identify what is needed to repair your TMJ. If scar tissue or inflammation is blocking your jaw movement, these tissues will be removed to decrease your jaw pain and improve your jaw movement.
