About Balloon Sinuplasty

Information

Balloon Sinuplasty at Jefferson

Chronic sinusitis – an inflammation or infection of the air-filled cavities that surround the nose and eyes – often does not go away with antibiotics, decongestants or nasal sprays alone. In order to clear the blocked sinus passageways, Jefferson head and neck surgeons use a minimally invasive surgical technique called Balloon Sinuplasty™. Our surgeons perform the most sinus surgeries in the Delaware Valley.

Used in combination with functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), a balloon-tipped catheter is threaded over a guidewire and inserted through the nose and into the sinus cavity. The balloon device is inflated and it stretches the sinus opening back to its original size or a little bigger, allowing for drainage of the sinus, thus putting an end to the sinusitis cycle. The balloon is then deflated and removed.
