Share Your 'I Can' Story About Overcoming Cancer

Dr. Gomella in surgery

Cancer is an often devastating disease. But in the midst of each person’s struggles to overcome cancer emerge powerful and inspiring stories.

Stories such as 45-year-old Jackie’s confrontation with breast cancer, 22-year-old Rob Long’s efforts to kick brain cancer and 50-year-old John’s clash with prostate cancer have helped others. So can yours.

If you’ve faced cancer with Jefferson’s team of specialists, we want to hear your story.

Vivian L. shared her story of overcoming bladder cancer with us. In her own words, she says that the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson's “interdisciplinary team of medical personnel who not only used their expertise to help me through surgery, radiation and chemo, but were also able to offer emotional support for me and my family.”

Now Vivian says, “I can lead a full life after a cancer diagnosis.”

Jefferson Opens Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities

Eliminate Cancer Disparities

Overall, cancer rates have gone down in the United States, but disparities in those rates remain among certain groups and minorities. This is true in the Philadelphia region, which has a disproportionately high number of residents suffering from cancers, many of which are preventable and treatable.

That’s why researchers and clinicians at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson have established the Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities.

Heading up the center is Jefferson University Hospitals medical oncologist, Edith P. Mitchell, MD, FACP, who has spent her medical career helping individuals in medically underserved areas.

“The first step in the elimination of disparities is to raise awareness through public and professional education about what resources are available to groups in their fight against cancer,” she says.

Is Your Lipstick Putting You at Health Risk?

Lipsticks

I'm not a fan of makeup. I just never really liked the way it feels on my face, and it sometimes aggravates my sensitive skin. In my career, of course, I'll wear makeup to look polished and professional, brushing on a soft complexion with some rosy cheeks and plum-colored lips.

Once the weekend hits, however, I'm all about going au naturale.

Now I've learned of another reason to dislike makeup. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, which analyzed a study conducted by the FDA, found that 400 lipsticks on the market tested positive for lead. You read that right, lead!

Read on to find out which products were the worst offenders.

A Heart Healthy Cheesesteak, Really!

Heart healthy cheesesteak

When I lived in Chicago and came back to Philly for a visit, I never truly felt like I was home until I had a good cheesesteak.

Now, I’m back living here and can get cheesesteaks, chicken cheesesteaks, hoagie cheesesteaks and more, anytime I feel like it. Unfortunately, being a bit older, even the occasional Amoroso roll topped with thinly sliced grilled meat, fried onions and melted Provolone seems unwise from a weight and health perspective.

Well, this heart-healthy cheesesteak recipe looks like it could give me a taste of that old feeling of being home without crushing my efforts to eat better, keep my cholesterol under control as well as my waistline.

If cheesesteaks aren’t your thing, check out other heart-healthy recipes.

So as you celebrate Heart Health Month, our Health eCooking pages can help you eat well and stay well. You will also find lots of gluten-free recipes and recipes geared toward people with diabetes.

If you have questions about heart health, please submit it to Jefferson interventional cardiologists on our online Ask the Experts about Interventional Cardiology forum. You can also check out the answers to other questions including video answers from Jefferson cardiologist.
