Welcome to the home page of the Department of Anesthesiology. The Department is a large and varied academic department fully dedicated to carrying out the mission of Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson University Hospital and the Jefferson Health Care Network.

The Department is made up of a large number of skilled physician anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, researchers and dedicated support staff.

Anesthesia care is provided for all types of surgical and invasive procedures from the most straightforward to the most complex.

In addition to anesthesia services for surgery, a separate division of the department cares for patients with chronic pain management problems. A dedicated acute pain management team cares for post operative pain.

The Department sponsors a fully accredited residency training program, fellowship programs, as well as educational programs for medical students.

Two nationally recognized CME programs are offered each year as well.

Research efforts are focused on a variety of clinical and basic science topics including control of carbohydrate metabolism, improved techniques of pain management,, malignant hyperthermia syndrome and the effects of anesthetics on vascular smooth muscle function.
