Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals and the Center for Urban Health (CUH) is named one of 33 nationwide finalists for the 2010 Hospital Charitable Service Awards, sponsored by Jackson Healthcare.
According to awards chairman Charles R. Evans, FACHE, the Hospital Charitable Service Awards seek to find, reward and share stories of hospitals that consistently push beyond their core mission of providing essential healthcare services and generously give back to the communities they serve. "The work done by Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals' ARCHES Project epitomizes the spirit of these awards," said Evans.
The ARCHES Project is a multifaceted initiative to improve the health status of individuals and targeted communities and neighborhoods in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. ARCHES focuses on six domains or themes, including:
- A - Access and Advocacy
- R - Research, Evaluation and Outcomes Measurement
- C - Community Partnerships and Outreach
- H - Health Education, Screening and Prevention Programs
- E - Education of Health Professions Students and Providers
- S - Service Delivery Systems Innovation
Key initiatives include:
- Care for the homeless
- Breast health education for sheltered women
- Diabetes self-management education
- Community collaboration addressing obesity
- A refugee health center
- Hypertension, stroke and prostate cancer education
