Coping with Breast Cancer (Support)

It goes almost without saying that breasts are important to women in their physical image of themselves, which is turn is a component of overall sense of self. Breast health affects appearance and a woman’s sense of healthfulness. In addition, cancer is a scary word. And major illness is one of life’s most stressful events. For all these reasons and more, having breast cancer can generate many emotions.

When diagnosed with breast cancer, you will almost surely need the support of your friends, your family, and healthcare providers. And, you will need to rely on good communication. The people close to you will also be affected by this event.

Of course, every breast cancer case and situation is different, as is the experience for every woman during this challenging time. Each person brings a different set of coping skills to this event. Some feelings, though, are common upon discovering that you have breast cancer . Your feelings may include fear, anxiety, depression, and anger. These reactions are normal. You should think of them as a process that can bring you back to addressing your condition head on and focusing more fully on getting well.

Psychological issues

Jefferson offers support to help you get through the difficult experience of breast disease. Our Breast Care program’s coordinating staff, clinical counselors, and consulting psychiatrists have special interest and experience in assisting people who are dealing with this diagnosis and who are finding their way through care for it. Providing assistance and psychology services is an important part of the comprehensive approach of our Breast Care. You will find a wide range of support and education programs at Jefferson Hospital.

Support

Jefferson’s Breast Care team will guide each patient through the healthcare system, advocate on their behalf, and provide information that will assist them in making treatment and care decisions. Jefferson’s many support programs are likewise offered through its Kimmel Cancer Center support services , and these include:

  • Facing Breast Cancer gives women the opportunity to obtain information on issues relevant to breast cancer treatment and recovery, as well as share their experiences and talk to other women.

  • The Buddy Program helps get women in touch with other women who have had breast cancer. Women will call each other to share experiences, provide insight, and give each other support.

  • Navigating the New Normal is a program to help young adults navigate the “new normal” that a cancer diagnosis brings. This program provides support and education for individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 who are living with cancer or a history of cancer. The program helps to address such concerns as fertility, intimacy, body image, and work.

Experienced oncology social workers provide counseling and psychosocial support and resources, as well as assistance with financial, legal, and insurance issues. Family and friends are also provided information, support programs and guidance.

Spiritual issues

Learning that you have breast cancer can be shocking, and it certainly brings serious pause to a woman’s life. This development can generate many thoughts about life and faith. It can be a troubling passage during which having someone to counsel with or confide in about beliefs, values, and emotions can be a godsend. You may feel increased need for fellowship and worship. Experienced members of Jefferson’s Pastoral Care Program are there for you during this time.
