  • The Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated clinical cancer center.

  • Jefferson doctors are cited in “ Best Doctors in America” for cancer treatment.

  • Jefferson’s Hereditary Cancer testing program is among the Delaware Valley’s most comprehensive.

  • Jefferson’s Radiation Oncology Chair Walter J. Curran, MD, now serves his third four-year term as Group Chair of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), a Philadelphia-based federally funded cancer clinical trials group. In addition, Adam P. Dicker, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology and Director of the Division of Experimental Radiation Oncology, in the Department of Radiation Oncology, has been appointed the RTOG Vice-Chair for Translational Research and Chair of the RTOG Translational Research Program Committee. Both Drs. Curran and Dicker are members of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson.

  • Thomas Jefferson University Hospital has received a three-year approval with commendation for its cancer program from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, its highest possible recognition. The Commission on Cancer approval is based on a number of factors, such as the ability to provide comprehensive state-of-the-art services and equipment, a multidisciplinary, team approach for the coordination of cancer care, a cancer data management system, or cancer registry, capable of recording and analyzing trends by primary site, demographics, treatment and patient outcomes and lifetime follow-up and extent of disease analysis.

  • Richard C. Wender, MD, Alumni Professor and Chair of Family and Community Medicine, Jefferson Medical College and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, was voted President-elect of the American Cancer Society at its annual national meeting.  Dr. Wender will become the first primary care physician to lead the American Cancer Society.

  • Unraveling the mysteries of cancer, the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson is home to the 15th most cited researcher world-wide in Biochemistry & Biology (see www.in-cites.com/nobel/2005-bio-top100.html).

  • The top radiation oncologist at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital was also rated first in the nation in a survey by Medical Imaging, a leading national magazine.  The Medical Imaging Industry Top 10 ranked Walter J. Curran Jr., MD, professor and chair of radiation oncology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and clinical director of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson as the number one radiation oncologist/cancer researcher in the country. He was the only one in this category listed from the Philadelphia region.

  • Vascular surgeons at the Jefferson Wound Care Center have achieved dramatic results using hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat chronic wounds resulting from acute arterial insufficiency, osteomyelitis, necrotizing infection, compromised skin grafts and flaps, diabetic wounds of the lower extremity, paraplegia and pressure ulcers, radiation treatment and non-healing surgical wounds.

  • Currently, Jefferson Hospital’s Department of Radiology offers 10 high-field MRI units, five helical CT scanners, two open MRI units, three multi-slice CT scanners (which includes two  16-detector scanners), a PET scanner and PET CT/MR Fusion, four all-digital angiographic suites, four fluoroscopy rooms, 30 ultrasound scanners, eight nuclear medicine cameras, 11 general radiographic rooms, five portable x-ray units, a polytomography unit, eight mammography units, and one stereotactic core breast biopsy device.

  • The Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine offers Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy (MBAT) groups for cancer patients.  This program has been found to reduce distress and improve quality of life in women and men with cancer.  The program is part of a grant from the National Cancer Institute, and is offered free to Jefferson cancer patients. The Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine offers Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) groups, a popular program that helps participants learn to reduce stress and enhance wellness. Patients with a wide variety of illnesses, including cancer, have been helped by Jefferson’s MBSR program.
