KIMMEL CANCER CENTER AT JEFFERSON

William M Keane, MD
Chairman, Department of Otolaryngology

Head and neck cancer currently accounts for approximately 5 percent of all cases of cancer diagnosed annually in the United States.  ead and neck cancer refers to malignant tumors that originate in cells that line various areas of the head, neck and throat, including the mouth, nose and larynx.  Prolonged hoarseness and difficulty in swallowing, as well as a lump in or around the nose, mouth or throat, are primary warning signs of possible head and neck cancer.

Jefferson University Hospital physicians and staff share in a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of cancers that affect the esophagus, nose, mouth, voice box, and thyroid. The Department of Otolaryngology provides the most comprehensive cancer care for patients. Jefferson otolaryngologists participate in a weekly tumor conference where patients are discussed with members of Jefferson University Hospital’s Kimmel Cancer Center—radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, surgeons and nurses. In these meetings, we develop a team approach to the care of our patients, with a focus on providing an individualized plan that offers patients the very best outcome.
