Systemic Chemotherapy

When an unresectable liver tumor is confined to the liver, our preferred treatment approach is regional therapy with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) or internal radiation with 90 Yttrium spheres.

However, for patients with metastatic cholangiocarcinoma, we may recommend systemic chemotherapy. Currently, we do not generally recommend systemic chemotherapy for widespread hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) because of poor response rates. If a patient with HCC develops localized extra-hepatic spread to a lymph node, bone or adrenal gland, focused radiation therapy may sometimes be recommended.

For patients with metastatic colon/rectal cancer to the liver, it is very common that they have already undergone some form of systemic chemotherapy. After a surgical resection for a hepatic metastases from colon cancer, the liver surgeons at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital will collaborate with your oncologist to discuss options with you and help you decide if post-operative systemic chemotherapy is recommended.
