There comes a time in the natural history of most patients with cancer that the cancer begins to grow beyond our ability to
control it – even with the most modern methods. Multiple symptoms are associated with this phase of cancer evolution – including
management of anorexia (loss of appetite and energy), pain, depression and poor nutrition. Some patients’ families wish for
their care in the final phases of their disease to be at home; others cannot manage this. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
provides a palliative care program that arranges consultation for home hospice care or referral of our patients to in-patient hospice care in the final phases
of their lives.
