Workshops For Professionals
We are offering two full-day workshops this fall on the Jefferson Center City Campus for professionals who work with patients
and clients to address their physical and emotional pain, improve their vitality, and increase their coping skills with various
medical and psychological conditions. These workshops offer a balance of didactic content and individual and group experiences.
Select the workshop which best applies to your profession, and earn a total of 7 continuing education hours upon its completion.
Mental Health Professionals Workshop Friday, November 7, 2008
This workshop is geared towards psychologists, clinical social workers, professionals, professional counselors, marriage and
family therapists, and addictions counselors.
Medical Professionals Workshop Friday, December 5, 2008
This workshop is intended for physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, hospital social workers, and
other health professionals.

Eight-Week Foundation Course in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
Fall 2008 Schedule:
- Monday mornings from 9:30 a.m. - noon from October 6 - November 24, at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Center City Campus,
Philadelphia, PA
- Tuesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., from October 7 - November 25, at Lankenau Hospital, 100 Lancaster Ave., Wynnewood.
Continuing Education Credit Hours are offered for the eight week course: Up to 30 CE hours are awarded by Thomas Jefferson University for health care professionals (nurses, OT/PT, etc.). The NASW-PA
Chapter is a co-sponsor of this workshop and will also award up to 60 hours for completion of this course. NASW has been designated
as a pre-approved provider of professional continuing education for Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional
Counselors (Section 47.36) by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.
Practicum In Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction For Professionals
This Practicum is for professionals who intend to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or who want to integrate
mindfulness into their professional practice. This program is modeled after the practicum offered at the Center for Mindfulness
at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The 60-hour Practicum extends for 10 weeks and includes attending morning
sessions of the foundation MBSR course as a participant observer, followed by afternoon seminar sessions.
By attending the practicum, participants will:
- acquire a deep understanding of the transformative possibilities in teaching mindfulness
- gain an overview of the streams of scientific and academic research surrounding mindfulness-based interventions
- experience guiding other Practicum participants in meditation practices
- gain practice in facilitating group discussion and individual inquiry
- explore ways to connect to the community of mindfulness professionals and obtain further training
Dates: The Fall 2008 practicum will be held on Mondays, from September 29 through December 1, 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Prerequisites for this program:
- a commitment to daily mindfulness practice
- participation in at least one 5-day or longer silent, teacher-led, mindfulness meditation retreat
- applicants who have attended the MBSR 7-day Residential Training/Retreat led by Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli, or who
have completed an 8-week MBSR foundation course, are given preference
Practicum fee is $1800. Limited financial assistance is available, and payment arrangements can be discussed on an individual basis. This cost includes
a $100 non-refundable application fee.

College Course In MBSR
HEALTH 301/IDSC 501: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Personal and Professional Wellness (3 credits, graduate or undergraduate). Begins on September 4, 2008.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) has proven to be most effective in promoting physical and psychological wellness
and is increasingly recommended by medical and healthcare practitioners. Jeff-at-Night is offering Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Personal and Professional Wellness in the Fall Semester 2008. The total experience is intended to promote personal and professional wellness and to provide a foundation for those interested
in integrating mindfulness into their professional practice. The course reviews stress physiology, the influence of stress
on disease processes, and the substantial evidence-based research that documents the numerous health benefits of MBSR. The
course includes the practice of formal mindfulness meditation techniques in weekly sessions as well as an optional one-day
mindfulness retreat. The class can be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit and meets once a week from 5:20 to 8:00 p.m.
on Thursdays, September 4 to December 18. Eligible employees can use their Jefferson education benefit to take this course.

Mindfulness is a meditative process that quiets the mind and releases physical distress. Through mindfulness you can experience
greater vitality and well-being in the present moment. Jefferson's mindfulness programs are based on the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn,
Ph.D. founder of the highly successful Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.
What Are The Benefits?
Research studies conducted by Thomas Jefferson University have demonstrated that mindfulness is effective in reducing chronic
pain, medical symptoms, anxiety and depression. Other studies have proven stress reduction to be helpful in treating sleep
disorders, high blood pressure, heart disease and asthma.

Overview Of Mindfulness-Based Programs At Jefferson
Eight-Week Foundation Course in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
This program runs for eight consecutive weeks, including weekly meetings of 2.5 hours each, and an additional full-day session
occurring on a weekend. CDs and workbooks are included to support home practice. This program offers practical, effective
mind-body techniques that make sense for people dealing with daily life challenges. During this program participants learn:
- Sitting meditation
- Body awareness and deep relaxation
- Mindful stretching
- Mental imagery exercises
- Mindful communication
- Skillful stress management strategies
Morning and evening courses take place throughout the year at the Center City Jefferson campus and other locations. Course
tuition is $495. Limited financial assistance is available.
Practicum in MBSR for Professionals
This program is for professionals who intend to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction or who want to integrate mindfulness
into their professional practice. This 60-hour program extends over a 10-week period, and includes attending morning sessions
of the foundation MBSR course as a participant observer, followed by afternoon seminar sessions. Up to 60 Continuing Education
Hours are available for this program, and an application process is required. The Practicum fee is $1800, with limited financial
assistance available.
Mindfulness at Work: Stress Reduction in the Workplace
On-site workshops, seminars and courses are available. On-site executive coaching in mindfulness practices is also offered.
College Course in MBSR
A 3-credit college course, titled Health 301 / IDSC 501: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Personal and Professional Wellness, is available through Jeff-At-Night, Jefferson College of Health Professionals, during their Fall and Spring academic semesters,
at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This program not only promotes personal and professional wellness, but creates
a foundation to explore mindfulness-based interventions for those wanting to integrate mindfulness into professional practice.
Eligible employees can use their Jefferson education benefit to take this course.
Private Instruction in Mindfulness Meditation
Beginning and advanced private lessons with a Jefferson Mindfulness Meditation teacher are offered.
Graduate Courses in Mindfulness
Eight-week advanced courses are offered to past participants in our mindfulness programs.
Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy (MBAT)
This eight-week program for women diagnosed with cancer, or recurrence within three years, integrates a creative and expressive
component into the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction curriculum. Additionally, the small group size fosters a supportive,
therapeutic environment.

Director of Professional Education and Development

Diane Reibel, PhD
Diane Reibel, PhD, co-founded the Stress Reduction Program at the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine in
1996. She has taught mindfulness-based stress reduction programs for over sixteen years. Dr. Reibel has participated in professional
training under the direction of Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts
Medical Center, and has completed the most advanced training through UMASS. In addition, she is a Research Associate Professor
in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at Jefferson, and studies the
effects of mindfulness on physical and psychological health. Her research is published and widely cited in both scientific
journals and the popular press. Dr. Reibel brings both a scientific foundation and heartfulness to her work.

Don McCown, MAMS, MSS
Don McCown, MAMS, MSS, launched the Mindfulness at Work initiative over five years ago, bringing MBSR to corporations, non
profit organizations and professionals. He also teaches MBSR in Jefferson's Stress Reduction Program, as well as instructing
the College Course in MBSR to both graduate and undergraduate students in the Jefferson College of Health Professions. He
is a staff therapist at Council for Relationships, where he integrates mindfulness in his work with families. He publishes
and presents on mindfulness and its applications in mental health care and the workplace.
Executive and Medical Director, Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital

Daniel A. Monti, MD
In additional to his leadership role in the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine, Daniel A. Monti, MD is an
Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Jefferson Medical College
and Thomas Jefferson University. He has expertise in several areas of integrative medicine, particularly mind-body medicine
and integrative oncology, and has dozens of scholarly publications and presentations in these areas. Dr. Monti currently is
the recipient of a research grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/ National Cancer Institute (NCI) to study the
effects of mindfulness-based art therapy for cancer patients.
