Stress and the Workplace
Stress is an inevitable byproduct of life, which has far-reaching effects on individuals and organizations.
Stress is implicated in:
- employee absenteeism
- accidents and injuries
- a wide variety of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, chronic pain, depression and anxiety disorders
These effects of stress are expensive in the workplace, resulting in decreased productivity and lowered morale, and higher
medical costs.
Mindfulness at Work can help to reduce the negative effects of stress and institute healthy changes in the workplace.
The Center of Integrative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is pleased to offer Mindfulness at Work programs
to be held at your site or at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
What is Mindfulness at Work?
In Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, participants learn practices that enable them to let go of non-productive thought patterns,
release tension in effective ways and improve concentration.
Participants learn to:
- identify stressors in their life
- modify behavior to interrupt stress-producing cycles
- meet life situations with increased awareness and options for action
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction uses a variety of cognitive and physical strategies, including mindfulness meditation,
relaxation techniques and communication skill building.
How effective is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction?
MBSR programs have a 20-year history of effectiveness. Research has documented a variety of positive health benefits:
- increased vitality
- reduced fatigue and anxiety
- increased stress hardiness
- improved health status
- decreased health care costs
What past participants have said:
“The value of taking a small amount of time for myself to do these practices flows over into my health and well being, my
family and my work.”
“I am more present with my clients and am able to listen and engage with them more clearly. I feel I offer them more options
and better direction.”
“I am definitely more efficient this year (after taking the program) than last year.”
