Academic Colon and Rectal Surgery Associates strongly endorses participation in the Familial Colorectal Cancer Registry at
Jefferson. The Registry is a multi-disciplinary, collaborative program based on a comprehensive strategy of reducing colorectal
cancers by detecting them in their early stages, when 90 percent of them are curable – often without invasive and expensive
treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
One recognized risk factor for colorectal cancer is family history, which accounts for approximately 6 percent to 20 percent
of all cases. Researchers at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson are studying the genes that predispose individuals to inherit
sporadic forms of colorectal cancer, and developing new and innovative approaches for identifying at-risk individuals. They
are also looking for tumor markers that may indicate which treatment will work best for a particular tumor type. Blood and
tissue samples are evaluated for genetic markers related to colorectal cancer. Molecular diagnostic tests are being developed
to study the predisposition of family members to colorectal cancer.
The Registry collects medical and family history information as well as blood and tissue samples that serve as a resource
for Kimmel Cancer Center researchers. Additionally, the Registry provides individuals and families with appropriate screening
and surveillance guidelines depending on such factors as family and personal medical history.
The Familial Colorectal Cancer Registry at Jefferson collaborates with other registries throughout the United States and the
world to provide our patients access to the latest in medical science advances, technologies, and clinical trials for the
prevention, early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer. If you are concerned about your risk for colorectal cancer
