Suffering a stroke is a devastating event. Getting immediate and appropriate treatment is essential to making a full recovery. The Jefferson Acute Stroke Center is one of the most advanced and acclaimed centers in the U.S. for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and research of stroke. Our approach to treating the sudden onset of stroke begins with our emergency medical staff, whose quick response and expertise can increase your recovery prospects by up to 50 percent. Jefferson neurologists and neurosurgeons have pioneered new treatments for stroke and use the latest techniques including:
- Minimally invasive treatment procedures, including:
– Wingspan™ Stent System
– Coil embolization
- Merci Retriever (which extracts clots from the artery)
- Cerebral Angioplasty and Stenting
- Carotid Endarterectomy
- Intravenous tPA and Intra-Arterial tPA (clot busters)
The Acute Stroke Center is housed within Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience, the only hospital dedicated to neuroscience in the region. Here, we have the highest number of board-certified neuro-intensivists and the highest number of dual-trained endovascular neurosurgeons in the region. Center Director Rodney Bell, MD, was the nation's first doctor to perform brain perfusion for stroke treatment.
In addition, we are supported by a superb team of neuro-intensivists, therapists, nurses, neurophysiologists, physiatrists, case managers and other healthcare professionals dedicated to the care of stroke patients.
