About the Breast Care Center

Jefferson Breast Care Center physicians

Maintaining the health of your breasts is an important part of your well being. From learning how to do a proper self-examination, to understanding changes in your breasts due to hormones or the role of physical activity in maintaining good breast health - these are important issues. For any issues concerning your breasts including breast screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, you can turn to the Jefferson Breast Care Center.

At the Jefferson Breast Care Center, a multidisciplinary team of experts including oncologists, surgeons, pathologists and other breast cancer specialists provides risk assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care for all women. This coordinated team approach can reduce the stress of dealing with a breast health problem or a breast cancer diagnosis. We will tailor treatment and care to your specific needs.

The Center is certified by the Commission on Cancer and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and has full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Cancers (NAPBC). Administered by the American College of Surgeons, the NAPBC recognizes centers that achieve the highest standards for breast cancer treatment in the areas of leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.

From the time you make your first appointment through any treatment you may need or accessing follow-up care, your breast care coordinator will be there with you at every step. Whether you have questions about screening, what your test results mean or what the next step in your care should be, our specially trained coordinator will assist and guide you through the treatment process.

Since all women are at risk of developing breast cancer, understanding those risks are important and may help you choose ways to reduce your risk or screening options that would be best for you. Jefferson's Breast Care Center offers a Risk Assessment Program that collects specific information about you and your family to help calculate your individual risk. The results of your assessment will guide you on how to reduce your risk and the best screening options for you.

Because we know that early detection increases survival rates, the Jefferson Honickman Breast Imaging Center was opened in 2007. Offering the latest diagnostic imaging technology and staffed by specialized breast radiologists and technologists, our experts are there to provide you clinical expertise in screening and detection of breast abnormalities. The Imaging Center offers screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and both surgical and nonsurgical biopsies.

If you are someone who is diagnosed with breast cancer, your physician can recommend several types of treatment – surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy or integrative therapies.

While diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer has improved dramatically over the past several years, it is the research that will provide the insight into the underlying causes of cancer and the challenges in preventing, understanding, detecting, diagnosing, treating and following disease states. Jefferson researchers are on the front lines of this research and can offer you access to clinical trials.
