Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

About the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

Michael P Savage, MD, Division of Cardiology

When it comes to treating blocked coronary arteries, Jefferson offers more minimally invasive alternatives to surgery than any other hospital in the Delaware Valley. Cardiologists in our Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory routinely perform balloon angioplasty, coronary artery stenting, excimer laser angioplasty, intracoronary ultrasound and rotational, directional and transluminal extraction arthrectomy.

Our cardiologists have pioneered some of the most advanced interventional cardiology procedures and were among the first in the U.S. to implant stents to open blocked arteries and to use drug-eluting stents to prevent re-obstruction of coronary vessels after stenting.

Promising Procedure for Preventing Stroke

Jefferson's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory is testing the safety and efficacy of a minimally invasive procedure to seal a flap that can be present between the two upper chambers of the heart known as patent foramen ovale (PFO). Evidence suggests that this flap may be the cause of unexplainable strokes in younger patients. The catheterization procedure seals the PFO without the need for open-heart surgery or prescription blood thinners.
