Is there a special diet you recommend to patients after the surgery? Are there specific foods you recommend people eat or avoid?
For the first 6 months following surgery we recommend a diet of 800 calories/day with 60-80 grams of protein along with vitamin and mineral supplements. The diet consists of three ½ cup meals per day with protein supplements in between as determined by your registered dietitian. Typically, we do not recommend snacks if you are able to meet your protein goals with meals alone. The meals should focus around lean protein, vegetables, beans/legumes, low fat dairy and some fruit. For the first three to six months we recommend limiting starches and added fats to maximize weight loss results. You will work closely with a registered dietitian to help transform these diet recommendations into a personalized eating plan that takes into account your individual preferences, finances and meal preparation time and skills.
