The Department of Orthopedic Surgery is comprised of more than 50 board-certified physicians who develop, teach and practice groundbreaking therapies and technologies that shape patient care practices around the country. Our orthopedic surgeons are specialists who use both surgical and non-surgical procedures to treat six specialty areas of orthopedics: hip and knee, shoulder and elbow, foot and ankle, hand and wrist, spine and sports medicine.

Research and Education

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery is currently ranked fourth in the U.S. and first in Pennsylvania for our NIH-funded research, and is the recipient of substantial research funding from the U.S. Department of Defense and private industry.

Scientists at Jefferson Medical College have received a five-year, $1.7 million National Institutes of Health grant funded by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases to study mechanisms regulating stem cell self-renewal and differentiation with the aim of regenerating diseased and painful intervertebral discs.
