Jefferson's Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is one of the leading programs in the U.S. for the diagnosis, treatment, research and education of diseases of the digestive tract and liver.
The first liver transplant in the region was performed at Jefferson, and today Jefferson is home to the longest continuously active Liver Transplantation Program in the Delaware Valley.
Physicians of the Jefferson Digestive Disease Institute use the Third Eye® Retroscope®, an advanced technology that can improve the detection of polyps and reduce inconvenience for patients who need colon cancer screening. It is estimated that this technology will help physicians improve polyp detection by 10 percent.
Jefferson's Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Program has a team of experienced and dedicated healthcare professionals offering you the safest, most successful bariatric surgery experience possible. Our surgeons are board certified by the American Board of Surgery and fellowship trained in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery.
Jefferson gastroenterologists have a long history of excellence in the diagnosis and management of celiac disease as well as extensive experience in helping adults manage this lifelong condition. You will benefit from our state-of-the-art technologies, allowing unobtainable access to the entire small intestine to aid in the diagnosis of your condition.
Our state-of-the-art 24-hour ambulatory pH monitoring system allows for the simultaneous assessment of proximal esophageal, distal esophageal and gastric pH to accurately measure the degree of acid reflux.
Our physicians' clinical research focuses on new therapies of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as new biologic agents designed to reduce or eliminate inflammatory reactions in IBD.
For treatment of disorders of the pancreas and bile ducts, Jefferson has access to state-of-the-art technology including diagnostic and therapeutic pancreaticobiliary endoscopy, therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound, helical CT scanning and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Jefferson's Endoscopic Ultrasound Unit is comprised of gastroenterologists, radiologists and pathologists who are experts in using endoscopic ultrasound to accurately stage most gastrointestinal disorders, including esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, ampullary and rectal cancers.
Our Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit is one of the busiest academic endoscopy units on the East Coast; our physicians perform more than 13,000 endoscopic procedures a year.
