If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a neurological disorder such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, a brain tumor or an aneurysm, you want to find the right physicians with the expertise to devise the right treatment plan. That's what you will find at Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience. It is the only dedicated hospital for neuroscience in the Philadelphia region.

It's here that the most advanced treatment technologies, world-class specialists and leading-edge research come together. You can take comfort in knowing that Jefferson neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, radiation oncologists and psychiatrists all work together to provide you with the best care possible.

Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience was the first in the Delaware Valley to offer such state-of-the-art technologies as fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery (also known as stereotactic radiotherapy); Gamma Knife; Shaped Beam Surgery™; minimally invasive neurosurgery utilizing a robotically controlled microscope; and NeuRx DPS™, an FDA-approved device that helps individuals with certain types of spinal cord injuries breathe on their own again.

In addition, Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience has launched Jefferson Expert Teleconsulting (JET) in connection with its Jefferson Neuroscience Network. JET, the region's first university-based high-tech mobile robotic teleconsulting system, allows Jefferson neuroscience specialists to evaluate time-sensitive neurovascular diseases, most notably stroke, in real time and without delay. With JET, your community hospital physician can request an immediate consultation with one of our neuroscience specialists. Our specialist is able to examine you and speak directly with you and/or your family to: obtain a medical history; view results from lab tests and radiology studies; and, in consultation with the attending physician at your community hospital, recommend the appropriate treatment. A decision is then made either to continue treatment at your community hospital or to transfer you to a facility that can provide more advanced care, such as Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience.

  • Jefferson is ranked a Top Hospital for Epilepsy, Headache, Multiple Sclerosis, Neurology, Spinal Cord Injury, Aging and Stroke by Philadelphia magazine.
  • Our Hospital has Advanced Certification by the Joint Commission in Stroke (Primary Stroke Center) and is one of the few hospitals with a Level 1 Trauma Center and a federally designated regional spinal cord injury center.
  • Jefferson neurosurgeons treat the largest combined volume of tumors, aneurysms and AVMs (arteriovenous malformations) in the Philadelphia region.

Learn More About the Department of Neurology

  • The Department of Neurological Surgery at Jefferson represents one of the busiest academic neurosurgical programs in the country, offering comprehensive management for patients with neurological diseases affecting the brain and spine.
  • Jefferson's neurosurgical program emphasizes state-of-the-art treatment of brain tumors, spinal disease, vascular brain diseases, epilepsy, pain, Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders. These treatments include, whenever possible, procedures that are safer than conventional surgery on the brain or spine, including precisely targeted radiosurgery and minimally invasive neurosurgery.

  • Physicians of the Division of Neurovascular Surgery and Endovascular Neurosurgery offer a comprehensive array of treatments for cerebrovascular disease. Some of these procedures are minimally invasive or noninvasive, which reduces risk for all patients and, in particular, provides options to those patients who cannot withstand the rigors of open surgery.
  • The Jefferson Brain Aneurysm and AVM Center is the largest center in the Delaware Valley, with physicians who have evaluated and treated more than 5,000 patients with brain aneurysms and cerebral and spinal AVMs.

Learn More About the Division of Neurovascular Surgery and Endovascular Neurosurgery

  • The Division of Neuro-Oncologic Neurosurgery and Stereotactic Radiosurgery is dedicated to the surgical treatment of brain tumors. The goal of our Division is to cure brain tumors or, when cure is not possible, maximize both length and quality of life for each of our patients. All surgical techniques developed by members of the Division are designed to maximize therapeutic benefit while remaining safe and, when possible, are minimally invasive.
  • Among surgical techniques that have been developed within the Division is the combined use of MRI with motor and/or speech corticography (an electrical procedure for accurate evaluation of lesional-functional activity). This has provided patients with safe and effective means of removing tumors near speech or motor function areas without harming these vital brain areas.

  • Physicians of the Division of Neuroradiology/Head and Neck Radiology perform all the radiological and imaging procedures related to the nervous system, head, neck and spine. The Division has access to two high-field inpatient MR scanners, two 16-slice multidetector CT scanners, a myelography suite, reading rooms and staff offices. Additional outpatient equipment includes seven 1.5 T MRI units, two open MRI units and two additional CT scanners.
  • Approximately 300 selective cerebral arteriograms, 200 myelograms and 16,000 CTs of the head and spine are performed each year in the Division. In addition, approximately 28,000 MRI scans of the head and spine are performed annually.
