We suggest optimizing the diet with the intent to make healthier estrogen metabolites and reduce inflammation. Eliminate dairy, red meats, fried foods, sugar, starches, salt, caffeine and alcohol. We recommend a plant-based diet, which means significantly increasing fresh vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and some dark colored fruits like blueberries.
Lignins, found in whole grains can help balance excess estrogen. They are found in flaxseed, rye, buckwheat, millet, oats, barley, brown rice and wheat. Lots of cruciferous vegetables (e.g., broccoli, brussel sprouts, arugula, kale, etc.) can help change estrogen metabolites from dangerous to safer.
More information on this lifestyle approach can be found in our book, The Great Life Makeover, by Daniel A. Monti, MD & Anthony J. Bazzan, MD.
